So Griffin got screwed. After not letting David Griffn meet with the Bucks to discuss a GM job, Cavs owner Dan Gilbert has decided not to renew Griffin's contract (and it's now probably too late to get another GM job), saying they "couldn't agree on the future". Looks like actually he didn't wanna pay him. Griffin seemed like a good GM. If you're not planning on paying him why not let him interview with these other teams Or at least ask them to wait. This was also announced the day after Milwuakee announced their new GM and Lebron who apparently wanted him to be signed again wasn't consulted. And Chauncy Billups is meeting with Gilbert today about the job! David Aldridge reported that Griffin was deep in trade discussions with the Bulls working on a deal to get Butler just an hour before being let go. Weird.
Apparently Gilbert has yet to agree a contract extension with any coach in his 12.5 years ownership of the Cavs.
I've always thought one of the greatest NBA challenges is there is only really one prize. Sure for up and coming teams starved of success they may celebrate a divisional or conference title. Making the playoffs is an achievement for some teams but for a decent chunk of franchises currently or historically used to success it is Champs or Chumps. That's a harsh environment to work in and presumably Gilbert has that philosophy. Personally I would say Griffin has overseen an amazing turnaround for the Cavs and was making the best out of Lebrons time left.
But this is a team that fired their head coach after a finals appearance and 31-11 record! Sure, they did go on to win the chip last season so it's hard to argue that was the wrong move, but what's to say Blatt wouldn't have won too if he was still around. To be fair you can't accuse Gilbert of being thrifty - the Cavs had a huge payroll this year and brought guys in that LeBron wanted, and overpaid guys to stay that he wanted to keep. This is why everyone jokes that LeBron is the real GM anyway! It just seems he won't spend money on the office staff. I'd be more nervous that there wasn't a clear successor lined up. If at the same time they were introducing Jerry West for example, it would make sense. But they'll probably end up with someone less experienced/unproven which would bother me as a Cavs fan, given they are only 2 more all stars away from competing with GS.
2NFR: Hogg could do a lot worse, Sharks on a bit of a roll right now ... could be the top team next season (depends if Attiba stays or not)
