Not sure what the funding cycle is, but are these results likely to impact on it? I guess UK sport (? Whoever the national programme is funded by) have attached targets - even if it's just improved record or ranking?
Not sure, i don't think it will go against us. Qualifying for the WC, leads to qualification to the 2020 Olympics. The top 7 at WC auto qualify, whilst the next best 16 teams go to a qualifying tournament for the last 4 spots. However, UK Sport seem to do things their own way and it depends on how they feel on the day in how they allocate funds.
According to that link, there's 24 teams in 4x6 qualifying tournaments, with the extra 8 sides being selected - presumably making space for the States if they don't qualify. i believe they have to qualify for the World Cup and i can't see which players are going to be available for the qualifiers. The numbers are a bit odd, the 7/8th and 23rd/24th place play-offs in the WC are actually going to matter.
It was DLeague players and it wasn't even really a well-constructed roster. That tournament meant nothing and only Argentina sent anything like a real team (playing at home) but the US still beat them. US has Puerto Rico, Mexico and Cuba in their group, and 7 of the 16 teams qualify (eventually). There is zero chance they don't qualify for the WC.
The extra QR spots are for federations to stick FIBA a huge bung for a lottery ticket to the Olympics. Because FIBA is committed to sporting merit only when arguing with Euroleague, until it isn't when large bags of cash are involved.
Disappointed for the team that they weren't able to pull out at least one win somewhere, but they seemed to give a good account of themselves. There's also a core of players emerging who should be able to build on the experience gained in years to come if we can keep them engaged with the program.
I saw a comment on Hoopsfix suggesting that the new qualifying format may help us, as other teams will have to adjust to not having their NBA/EuroLeague players while we'll be used to playing without them. Think there's something in that?
2NFR: Hogg could do a lot worse, Sharks on a bit of a roll right now ... could be the top team next season (depends if Attiba stays or not)
