As suspected, the Trophy/Patrons Cup/Shield are for the chop, and the plan includes moving to a three-tier structure for the league; NBL1 (National), NBL2 (North/South) and NBL3 (Regional).
Somewhat disappointed about the reduction in games - I’ve no huge issue with the secondary cups going, but I’d like to have seen more league games to balance it, even if it’s just one extra team at each level. Also wondering just what BE’s vision of a ‘more enticing offer for the league winners’ looks like, which might address that.
Interesting. In juniors, although acknowledged as a key piece of feedback from clubs they don't seem to have gone back to a competition at each year group (U13, U14, etc)? This is always going to create problems with match ups
I read the statement from BE and it is intriguing. In terms of the adult NBL structure I agree with what they are proposing/doing. You only need to read some of the stuff Hersey posts here or on his entertaining blog about the difficulties in running a NBL club to get an understanding of the travel/fixtures/unplayed games issues. So for me if they strip it back and restore the integrity of the competitions with a few less games then it is a price worth paying. Then build from there. Merging of D3/4 to hopefully reduce travel is also the right idea for me.
For the juniors I would really welcome a proper county/regional entrance level competition. BE cannot be allowed to abdicate their responsibility to get kids playing basketball to the local leagues that are (lets be honest) loosely affiliated to them. Not sure how "triangular" fixtures work in reality but would be happy to see it work!
I agree with Voise about the age groups making mismatches inevitable. I just wonder if there are enough kids at each year group to field teams? I was coaching last night our prospective U14s for next season and the difference between 11/12 years olds versus those on their way to being 14 next season is startling. On that subject I heard there are going to be restrictions on the younger age limit for players in each category? i.e. a 10 year old (regardless of size/talent) cannot play u14s etc. Is that true or perhaps already in place?
Hersey - I’ve just read your blog and get where you are coming from on the games front but I do think that if the fewer games is also combined with an insistence on a zero tolerance attitude for cancelling games it might prove beneficial in long run.
I appreciate BE are pretty poor at seeing things through or doing things well even.....
Of the 364 Division one & two regular season, play-off , Trophy and Patrons games scheduled last year, two weren't played. One was because Leicester couldn't be arsed and I don't know why the Westside/Westminster wasn't played but both games could have been played midweek. There are enough dates to (at least) maintain the current 14-team D1 and the Trophy. A little more thought when preparing the fixture list (Worthing's double away weekend at Bradford and Solent wasn't an isolated bit of lunacy) As I still haven't received an answer to my email regarding this, I can only assume BE just don't want the hassle of organising the Trophy. Not a great attitude from a NGB

chickenbroncitis: a good result to beat the sharks. Hopefully Lions getting rid of that coach will give us a good play off push and put us in the mix with the Eagles and Riders where we should be

ballerman: And there's our problem. You really only care about your own club. The Leicester cheer leader only cares about the competition his team plays in.
