Loving the weekly round-ups, I'd have little idea what was going on without them, even though I have a certain amount of interest in two 2 div 1 clubs.
I managed to catch the last 8 minutes of Hemels game against Loughborough. In Hemels previous home game I'd questioned whether they knew how to play d & when I checked the half time score & they'd let in 54 points, I thought I'd be questioning the same. I finally left home whilst they were still 6 points down in the 3rd, however by the time I walked in to the game they were up by 6 & I didn't see Loughborough score for the next 6+ minutes! They held them to 6 points in the last quarter & even when it was basically all over, Hemel kept up the defensive intensity, having Dru as coach seems to be finally bearing fruit at the defensive end, although I have no idea what they were doing in the 1st half. Hemels crowd can be quite loud but that was the best I'd heard down the stretch, the place was rocking & it clearly seemed to have an effect on Riders. There was even some controversy at the end when Sam Newman dunked the ball with 10 secs to go & some of the Riders got irritated with one getting a t. Whilst it probably wasn't the wisest shot to take, for those fans who'd witnessed Riders demolish Hemel last time they'd played there & seen the players pose & posture throughout the 2nd half it was a case of giving back some of what had been handed out. If you show no class in one game, don't expect any to be given in the next one!

Cheers. Final round-up The only thing I'd say about Sam dunking at the end is that the starters really should have been on the bench by the last three minutes. But it's a semi-pro game, not a tea dance; stop him dunking with a hard foul if it really irritates you.

Last year loughborough really went to town on the sidelines Usain Bolt poses the lot so Sam's reverse dunk at the end gave them some back. At the end of the day I pay to be entertained so thanks Sam! Compared to Youngblood, Dru is a breath of fresh air. I've heard him tell them if they try to execute the play he calls and it goes wrong it's his fault. This is the polar opposite to seeing players fearful of making a mistake. Also he's engaged with the team the whole time. Big game this coming weekend against Thunder.

I'd have legitimately tried to hurt him in the process. But that's why I'm considered a gobsh*te

The essential reason nobody fouled Sam was none of the Loughborough players were anywhere near him - after Hemel had stolen the ball, Sam ran down to an empty basket, leapt up, spun through 180 degrees and slammed the ball through the ring. All in all the perfect end to a perfect half.

So, it turns out Thames Valley played a ringer for two seasons. I don't blame them, I blame those that let it happen.

It was an absolute pleasure watching Cam Hildreth on Saturday. I told my son to watch him and he didn't disappoint. Always happy to clap an opposing player and when they are just 18 it's pretty mind blowing. Vince was in the crowd too and I'm sure he would have been impressed, even with hemel's generous defending!

Hildreth is a pleasure to watch. It'll be interesting to see if he goes to high school in the States next year or continues to play at Thunder, but he's certainly one for the future.
Finally, part one of the D1 round-up. It's tough at the bottom

It was, he was excellent to watch in the 1st half in particular, looks like he's got everything in his game. However, I question the amount of minutes he's being asked to play, I'm not sure Worthing are doing him any favours if he plays that many minutes every game, don't want him burnt out before he's even started. Good game of basketball, great atmosphere again & with better game management down the stretch Hemel would have beaten Worthing but they're a new team, with a coach learning his trade, they'll be better as the season progresses. They've got plenty of options & they just need to find the best way of utilising them all. If they manage to play 'd' in the first half of games, then it would certainly make games easier for them. Zaire & Alex showed they've still got plenty of talent & Worthing's starting 5 is excellent at this level, however they only really have one player to come off the bench & I wonder if Alex & Zaire can continue to play that many minutes all season.

The Worthing starting 5, well their only 5, certainly earn their money. Agree re Hemel being a work in progress, particularly enjoying watching Greg Poleon who has a great 16 foot shot.

I started my watching at Hemel, it will always have a place in my heart & the closeness of the fans to the players, the noise that can be generated in such a small area, is fantastic. However, Lions are my team & when we get the crowd going at the Box( which admittedly isn't nearly often enough yet) it's a different level to what can be achieved in Hemel.

Yeah apples and pears. Interestingly the non basketball fans I have taken to games have only ever returned to hemel. Logic behind this is as you said the close proximity to the court/players gives them a completely different experience to the premier league football they are used to.

[/quote] Yes, it's where basketball wins hands down. It's not only the closeness to the actual game, it's the fact you can actually interact with the players after the game, it's so far different from football, after a while you feel like you've become part of the club. It's what let's Lions down, the distance between the seats & the court, the fact kids & adults can't get down on the court after the game, it's not personal like the vast majority of basketball clubs.

I imagine price is also a factor. D1 basketball is a really cheap night out. BBL is probably mid-range.
But it's much the same as premier league v non-league. You swap quality for getting to know players in the bar and feeling part of it. The Box doesn't really work well for Lions in that regard.

They probably can for the one-game weekends. Zaire played less against us on a double-header weekend (Cup rules meant Owumi couldn't play on the Sunday). It's a an odd - though not unique - situation where players are deciding what minutes they play. I can't see why Ish doesn't play a bit more. Cameron either will or won't hit the rookie wall, he normally plays around 30 minutes per game. The abolition of the Trophy may have denied Thunder the chance to defend it, but it seems to be helping their main players stay on the court.
And, finally because life got in the way, the rest of the D1 round-up

The last time Liverpool played Solent, we beat them in the D2 playoff final.
That was officially the last time I touched a basketball.

Good game from what I remember. I also remember you posting you had work and didn’t enjoy your bro getting in at 5. Finish anyone off that. Good Liverpool team under Calvo

Good Liverpool team under Calvo Yeah went to OT- memorable one. Think I was the only one who didn't go out and get completely battered that night. Shame, but you know people wont sue themselves and all that....
Got to love Matt Guymon by the way - that entire family know the score completely.
On a sour note however, I've learned this morning that Liverpool have forfeited the game at Solent. Which absolutely sucks arse.
