Absolutely terrible. If the players honestly believe that is what the fans want then they are totally deluded. As Steve Kerr said you can play so better defence without it being silly and risking injury.
without defence it's not basketball. It's a glorified warm up and an insult to the play that got most of them the nod. Clearly a bi product of the buddy culture that generally exists in the NBA despite the apparent beef between Westbrook and Durant.
Yeah it seems to get worse every year. There's no prestige in scoring the most points ever in an all star game, or in Davis scoring over 50 because it's just a layup and 3 point procession. Sadly until they start getting empty seats in the arena and TV ratings dropping, nothing will be done to change the format. The rising stars game is even worse, I didn't bother watching any of that this year.
I wonder if a better way to do it would be to hold an all star game after the conference finals, before the finals in June. Ok so some guys will have been on vacation for 2 months but it seems to be an event they like to go and take part in and they are still being paid so I'd like to think that wouldn't be a problem. Guys who are on teams that are in the finals would most likely miss it, so that would be a draw back as you wouldn't have LeBron, Durant or Curry this year. However there'd still be plenty of other talent available. Reason for doing it then is because guys don't have to be so worried about picking up an injury and ruining their season, they're also fresher and ready to play properly again instead of seeing it as a chance to mess about. And to encourage more competitive play, each side should pick a charity to represent, with the winning team getting a $1M donation that charity. Perhaps the losing team still gets $250K just to make sure both charities get something. But when they're playing for someone else and not just themselves, maybe that would make them want to try harder?
NFL have the pro bowl . I think it's the week between the conference finals and the superbowl. It's also crap.
I'm not sure it's possible to save this kind of game but as it makes money it will continue.
It only got recorded in my house because mini Steph wanted to watch her boys. But when a nine-year-old announces it's "pants" before the first second period timeout you know it's time to stop caring. I only found out the score about an hour ago
Usually something salvages AllStar weekend. Often its been the 3 pt shoot out. This year - toilet. Last year the dunk contest had something of a renaissance - this year a particularly smelly dirty toilet.
The rookie/rising star games have been a crock of crap for years.
Don't even talk about the "celebrity" game!
The only way to get the players to play harder is to make it worth their while with a big money incentive. They're all loaded anyway yes but if there was something riding on the game then it would get the juices flowing and thats all anybody wants. We're not looking for charges or even help defence. Just play straight up man - go for the outrageous steal or block even! Just actually play defence of some description.
Then if on the fast break Curry finds himself back facing the Greak Freak and lays down to get out of the way its actually funny in isolation rather than a brilliant metaphor for what was basically happening all bloody game!
I have it recorded for my 5 year old and if he enjoys watching it then it will make my point :-) I managed the first quarter and then watched the rest of fast forward.
I think they could offer money, a charity donation and perhaps a trophy as well? It may seem trivial but sometimes if there is actually something to play for, and the chance to lift that trophy and wave it in the other team's face, and then the next year the side that doesn't have it will be fired up to get it - maybe that would be a bit of an incentive too. At the moment there is literally nothing to play for other than to win or lose but it really means nothing either way.
2NFR: Hogg could do a lot worse, Sharks on a bit of a roll right now ... could be the top team next season (depends if Attiba stays or not)
