This sparked an interesting debate on our clubs group chat about a favourite ball to play basketball with. A lot of our senior players hate the Wilson ball that is used in the junior (senior as well?) national league. As a club with 6 junior teams we mainly use those. Interestingly very few clubs in our league use Spalding these days. When i started playing in the 80s it was considered the best "match ball" but I think the link with NBA has lead them to be over priced possibly.
I'm slightly surprised they didn't go with Nike. If the spec of the Wilson ball is identical to the Spalding then it is clear there are no copyright issues at play (hard to copy right a ball!). They did it with golf balls.
On a loosely related topic one of my favourite pieces of commentary from NBA ever is some old footage of a blocked shot on the break and the commentator shouts "oh my god - hes got David Stern written on his forehead!!!!" as the ball after being swatted hit the poor guy in the head. Made me laugh anyway........:-)
